Guyana Police Force Targets 300 Youths

The Guyana Police Force through the Commander of ‘D’ Division Senior Superintendent Stephen Mansel has been striving assiduously to continue pushing its Social Integration and Crime Prevention Strategies to further drive the youths of Guyana to strive for higher heights.

This time the initative has taken the form of several ongoing programmes in the West Coast Demerara / East Bank Essequibo region with Seventy two (72) young adults who are currently pursuing a one year Diploma skills training programme at Leonora Technical, Skills and Vocational Training Centre which commenced on August 30, 2015. The youths are drawn from Parafaith Harmony, La Grange, Nismes, Bagotsville, Goed Fortuin, Dem Amsel, Stewartville, Uitvlugt and Tuschen communities respectively.

The initative has also seen the establishment of several youth clubs in various communities namely Viva-la-Force, Wales, La Grange, Vreed-en-Hoop and Stanleytown. Youth Club members are engaged in martial arts every Saturday by Shoto Khan Instructor 3rd degree Black Belt expert, Eon Mc Farlene between 1300h and 1500h.

Den Amstel, Leonora and Parika Youth Club members are currently engaged in Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) training every Saturday. Instructors are W/Cpl. 18995 Abrams and W/Cpl. 17091 Lovell between 1300h and 1400h.

On October 3rd 2015 a Girls Guide Group was launched at Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station, which attracted an initial fifty (50) young females who are engaged in foot drills, lectures on girls guides and skills training by trainers of the Girls Guide Association every Sunday from 1600h to 1730h. To date the total amount of youths that would have been positively engaged in these programmes are in excess of two hundred and ninety (320).

On October 16th 2015, the communities of La Grange, Bagotsville and Nismes saw the launching of a Youth Empowerment Programme at the Bagotsville Community Centre, where the following courses are being offered:
1. Computer Training
2. Sewing
3. Craft
4. Remedial Lessons
5. Boxing
6. football
