The Guyana Police Force has made a commitment to bear the funeral expenses for 46-year-old Brian Knight of Den Amstel, West Coast Demerara who was found hanging in a cell where he was held at the Leonora Police Station on May 30th, 2022.
Deputy Commissioner ‘Administration’ (ag), Mr. Calvin Brutus said discussions were held with Mr. Knight’s relatives, after which a commitment was made by the GPF to stand the funeral expenses.
Mr. Brutus noted that this decision was made “purely on humanitarian grounds” and should in no way be construed as an admission of culpability on the part of the GPF.
In fact, the Guyana Police Force’s Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR), as well as the Police Complaints Authority (PCA) are currently conducting separate and impartial investigations into the death of Mr. Knight.
Commander for Regional Division #3, Senior Superintendent Mr. Mahendra Siwnarine had indicated that around 13:30 hrs on May 30th, a police rank made a check at the Leonora Police Station Lock-Up and found that the person held in the Number One (#1) cell – Brian Knight -had apparently committed suicide.
Knight was seen hanging (motionless) in the cell. He was in custody for Assault/Domestic Violence allegedly committed on a 42-year-old female. His matter was prepared for court, where he was due to attend the following day (May 31st, 2022).
