……Regional Division #8
On Sunday April 13, 2025, a Traffic Awareness Exercise was conducted within the Mahdia Police Station District. The activity was spearheaded by Inspector K Lyttle, Traffic Officer of Police Regional Division #8, supported by Lance Corporal Fields, Subordinate Officer in Charge of Traffic at Mahdia Police Station, along with Community Policing Group (CPG) Members Shanita Williams and Declon Richard.
The main objective of the exercise was to educate road users on traffic safety regulations and encourage responsible behaviour on the roadways. Officers engaged with drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists at various points within the district, sharing safety information and providing verbal guidance on the following key topics:
* Leaving Vehicles in Dangerous Positions:
Road users were cautioned against parking in areas that obstruct traffic flow or pose hazards to others. Examples included parking on bends, near intersections or in a way yo encumber the roadway.
* Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol:
The dangers and legal consequences of impaired driving were discussed. Officers promoted the use of designated drivers and alternative transportation when consuming alcohol.
* Unlicensed Drivers:
Residents were reminded that operating a motor vehicle without a valid driverโs license is illegal.
* Importance of Wearing Safety Helmets:
Motorcyclists and pillion riders were informed about the vital role helmets play in reducing the risk of injury or death during accidents. Demonstrations were provided on proper helmet use.
* Importance of Wearing Seatbelts:
Drivers and passengers were encouraged to always wear seatbelts. Officers explained how seatbelts protect occupants during collisions.
Several individuals were stopped for minor traffic offenses, including:
* Leaving motor vehice in a dangerous position
* Not wearing helmets or seatbelts
* Uncertified Motor vehicle
* Breach of prescribe fitness
Rather than issuing tickets, officers conducted on-the-spot traffic education sessions at Mahdia Police Station and gave verbal warnings in an effort to encourage compliance.
The public responded positively to the initiative. This outreach also served to strengthen the relationship between the police and the community.
